Certain Model Year 2022 Nissan Rogue vehicles manufactured from March 31, 2022 to April 18, 2022 at the Smyrna, TN plant.

This issue (as described in Section 5 below) involves post-production damage to specific Nissan Rogue vehicles that were up-fit for a fleet customer by a third party during the specified period above. No other Nissan or INFINITI vehicles are affected.

The name, description and part number of the subject components are below:

FUEL TANK Fuel Tank Shell 4WD 17202 6RR1A

Total Number of Vehicles Potentially Involved:

Approximately 190 Model Year 2022 Nissan Rogue vehicles are affected.

Percentage of Vehicles Estimated to Actually Contain the Noncompliance:

17%

Description of the Defect:

During an up-fitting process on certain Rogue vehicles, a technician may have inadvertently punctured the upper left-hand radius on the fuel tank. If punctured, the fuel tank puncture could leak fuel, increasing the risk of injury.

Chronology of Principal Events:

On July 29, 2022, Nissan was notified of a field incident involving a fuel leak on a MY2022 Rogue commercial fleet vehicle. Nissan began an investigation into the incident.

The investigation determined that the tank had been damaged during a third-party up fitting process for the commercial fleet owner. To install a partition, a hole was drilled in the rear seat cross member area to set a plush nut fastener. The investigation determined that a technician completing the installation failed to use a drill stop on his tooling to prevent drilling through to the other side of the cross member and puncturing the fuel tank.

As part of the investigation, the upfitter inspected six (6) Rogue fleet vehicles still awaiting shipment and found one (1) vehicle fuel tank that contained the subject condition.

Nissan launched a dealer quality hold on July 29, 2022 to quarantine all potentially affected Rogue vehicles pending investigation.

August 24, 2022 – In an abundance of caution, Nissan decided to conduct a Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign to inspect all potentially affected vehicles and repair if the tank has puncture damage.

Description of Corrective Action:

Dealers will be notified beginning August 31, 2022. Owners of all potentially affected vehicles will be notified beginning on September 23, 2022, to bring their vehicle to the dealer for repair. The dealer will inspect the fuel tank for any damage and replace as necessary. All inspections and repairs will be performed free of charge for parts and labor.

Nissan will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy for the subject vehicles because they are still under warranty.

Copy of Notices:

Copies of all notices will be provided to NHTSA as they become available.
