INTRODUCTION
Nissan is conducting a Voluntary Emission Recall Campaign on certain Model Year 2015-2016 Altima, 2015-2016 Juke, 2016 Maxima, 2015-2016 Murano, 2015-2016 Quest, and 2015-2016 Pathfinder vehicles. Nissan has discovered that these vehicles are equipped with an On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) calibration that, if not repaired, may not detect a rear oxygen (O2) sensor short-to-ground or short-to-battery condition. The ECM (Engine Control Module) will be reprogrammed. This service will be performed at no charge for parts or labor.
IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
Nissan has assigned identification number R1620 to this campaign. This number must appear on all communications and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign.
DEALER RESPONSIBILITY
It is the dealer’s responsibility to check Service Comm for the campaign status on each vehicle falling within the range of this voluntary emissions recall which for any reason enters the service department. This includes vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by transient (tourist) owners and vehicles in a dealer’s inventory.
IMPORTANT
Attention California Dealers:
California law prohibits owners from renewing their California registration if emissions related recall work has not been performed. California dealers are now required to issue a proof of correction certificate to vehicle owners upon completion of emission related recall work. Please fill out one of the campaign completion forms for each owner that has this campaign performed. Instruct owners to keep this certificate unless they are requested to mail it to the DMV. A sample of the form is shown below.
In addition, an Emission Recall Campaign Completion Label must be filled out and attached to the underside of the vehicle hood. A sample of the label is shown below.
NOTE:
- These forms (item number CAEMRC-5-13) and labels (item number NIS-UHL-16) are available from Nissan Publications (1-800-247-5321) at no charge.
- When either item (form or label) is ordered, you will automatically receive the other item as well.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Reprogram the ECM
NOTE:
- Most instructions for reprogramming with CONSULT-III plus (C-III plus) are displayed on the CONSULT PC screen.
- Take the vehicle for a 10 minute drive in order to meet the following Idle Air Volume Learn (IAVL) conditions:
- Engine coolant temperature: 70 -100°C (158 – 212°F)
- Battery voltage: More than 12.9V (At idle)
- Transmission: Warmed up
- After reprogramming is complete, you will be required to perform Idle Air Volume Learn. The above condition are required for Idle Air Volume Learn to complete.
CAUTION:

*The GR8 must be used for this procedure.
- Connect the CONSULT PC to the vehicle to begin the reprogramming procedure.
- Start C-III plus.
- Wait for the plus VI to be recognized.
- The serial number will display when the plus VI is recognized.
- Select Re/programming, Configuration.
- Use arrows (if needed) to view and read all precautions.
- Check the box confirming the precautions have been read.
- Select Next.
- Select Nissan, Vehicle Name, and then the correct Model Year.
- If the screen in Figure 4 does not display, skip to step 9.
- Make sure VIN or Chassis # matches the vehicle VIN.
- If the correct VIN is displayed, select Confirm.
- Select Confirm.
- Select ENGINE.

- When you get to the screen shown in Figure 9, confirm this bulletin applies as follows.
a. Find the ECM Part Number and write it on the repair order.
NOTE: This is the current ECM Part Number (P/N).
b. Compare the P/N you wrote down to the numbers in the Current ECM Part Number column in Table A on the next page.
- If there is a match, continue with the reprogramming procedure. Proceed to step 15.
- If there is not a match, reprogramming is not needed. Proceed to CLAIMS INFORMATION section for “Does Not Require Reprogram”.

- Select Save.
- Select Next.
- Use arrows (if needed) to view and read all precautions.
- Check the box confirming the precautions have been read.
- Select Next.
- Read the Current Part Number and Part Number After Reprogramming. They should be different.
- Select Next.
NOTE:
- In some cases, more than one new P/N for reprogramming is available.
- In this case, the screen in Figure 14 displays.
- Select and use the reprogramming option that does not have the message “Caution! Use ONLY with NTBXX-XXX”.
- If you get this screen and it is blank (no reprogramming listed), it means there is no reprogramming available for this vehicle. Close C-III plus and refer back to ASIST for further diagnosis.
- Make sure OK is highlighted green (battery voltage must be between 0 and 15.5 Volts).
- Select Next.
IMPORTANT: Battery voltage must stay between 12.0 and 15.5 Volts during reprogramming or ECM reprogramming may be interrupted and ECM may be damaged.
NOTE: In the next step, the reprogramming process will begin when Start is selected.
- Select Start.
- Wait for both progress bars to complete.
NOTE: If the message shown in Figure 18 appears, there is data stored in the plus VI. Select “Yes” to proceed with reprogramming.
- When the screen in Figure 19 displays, reprogramming is complete.
NOTE: If the screen in Figure 19 does not display (indicating that reprogramming did not complete), refer to the information on page 16.
- Disconnect the battery charger from the vehicle.
- Select Next.
NOTE:
- In the next steps, starting on page 17, you will perform Throttle Valve Closed Position, Idle Air Volume Learn, Accelerator Closed Position, and DTC erase.
- These operations are required before C-III plus will provide the final reprogramming confirmation report.
ECM recovery:
Do not disconnect plus VI or shut down Consult III plus if reprogramming does not complete.
If reprogramming does not complete and the “!?” icon displays as shown in Figure 20:
- Check battery voltage (12.0–15.5 V).
- Ignition is ON, engine OFF.
- External Bluetooth® devices are OFF.
- All electrical loads are OFF.
- Select retry and follow the on screen instructions.
- “Retry” may not go through on first attempt and can be selected more than once.
If reprogramming does not complete and the “X” icon displays as shown in Figure 21:
- Check battery voltage (12.0 – 15.5 V).
- CONSULT A/C adapter is plugged in.
- Ignition is ON, engine OFF.
- Transmission is in Park.
- All C-III plus / VI cables are securely connected.
- All C-III plus updates are installed.
- Select Home, and restart the reprogram procedure from the beginning.
- Perform Throttle Valve Closed Position procedure.
- Follow the on-screen instructions (1, 2, and 3) to complete the procedure.
- Perform Idle Air Volume Learn (IAVL).
a. Turn the ignition ON and let the engine idle.
b. Select Next.
c. Select Start.
d. Wait for IAVL to complete.
NOTE:
- Listed below are common required conditions for IAVL to complete.
- If IAVL does not complete within a few minutes, a condition may be out of range.
- Refer to the appropriate Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for specific conditions required for the vehicle you are working on.
- Engine coolant temperature: 70 – 100° C (158 – 212°F)
- Battery voltage: More than 12.9V (At idle)
- Selector lever: P or N
- Electric load switch: OFF (Air conditioner, headlamp, rear window defogger)
- Steering wheel: Neutral (Straight-ahead position)
- Vehicle speed: Stopped
- Transmission: Warmed up
e. Select Next.
- Follow the on screen instructions to complete Accelerator Pedal Close Position Learning.
- Erase all DTCs as follows:
a. Turn the ignition OFF
b. Turn the ignition ON.
c. Wait for DTC erase to complete.
- Verify the before and after part numbers are different.
- Print a copy of this screen (Figure 28) and attach it to the repair order for warranty documentation.
- Select Confirm.
NOTE: If you cannot print the above screen:
a. Select Screen Capture.
b. Name the file.
c. Save the file in My Documents.
A copy of the screen is now saved in the CONSULT PC. It can be retrieved and printed at a later time.
- Close C-III plus.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the plus VI from the vehicle.

J2534-1 Re/Programming
Tutorial for Purchasing NERS Software
Software updated April 26, 2019 to version # 04.03.00. It is recommended the latest version of NERS be installed before connecting to a vehicle.
This NERS software supports reprogrammable Engine and Transmission control units from 1999 to 2019 model year vehicles, and 2005 MY and later VIN writing into ECUs, when using a Nissan validated pass-through device. Click the Reprogramming Tab for additional information on reprogramming. This software only provides ECU reprogramming, blank programming and VIN writing capability. It does not provide diagnostic or key programming capability. For Engine and Transmission control unit reprogramming and VIN writing capability on 2020 MY & newer, please use CONSULT-III plus or CONSULT-III plus R2R software.
Vehicle reprogramming requires the use of the following:
- Nissan validated J2534-1 device
- Nissan ECU Reprogramming Software (NERS)
- Personal computer running Windows XP (SP2 or later) or Windows 7 or 10 64Bit
- Applicable reprogram file
Nissan tested and validated the below listed devices. Nissan does not recommend the use of any other J2534-1 device not listed here.

September 2013, Nissan and Infiniti began the phase in of “Blank” Service Parts ECUs and TCMs. Depending upon the model and model year, replacement modules come WITHOUT software. When a replacement module is installed in an applicable vehicle for any reason, it will need to be programmed.
When you purchase a J-2534 Blank programming file, you will get a zip file containing a data file (.dat, .pdx, .xcal, .7z), a .csv or .xml file and a Reprog_readme.pdf. Please review the readme file for information on where to place the files in your PC.
How to find the proper J-2534 Blank Programming ECU file:
- Obtain the blank ECU part number when you purchase the replacement ECU. Nissan’s and Infiniti’s parts catalog provides both the blank ECU part number and the ROM-DATA ID part number (after programming part number) to be used. Enter this blank ECU part number in the field below.

- Using C-III plus software, retrieve the blank ECU part number from the new ECU. Enter this blank ECU part number in the field below.
