***** Campaign Summary *****
Nissan
is committed to the safety and security of our customers and their passengers. Nissan
previously notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the previously announced Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign (R22C5) for MY2018-2023 LEAF vehicles was being expanded to include certain MY2013-2023 LEAF vehicles to correct the instructions for defrost operation in very cold temperatures. After further discussions with NHTSA, Nissan
is removing the MY2013-2017 LEAF vehicles from R22C5 and moving them to a new campaign R23A1.
Following the Owner’s Manual instructions for defroster operation may result in reduced defroster performance under specific conditions. More specifically, in very cold temperatures (below 23 F/-5 C), maximum fan speed can result in the Positive Temperature Coefficient (“PTC”) heater entering failsafe mode for undercurrent protection, which can limit defroster output. This reduced defroster performance can limit visibility out of the windshield, which does not meet the requirements of S4.3 of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 103; Windshield defrosting and defogging systems. The potential for loss of forward visibility may lead to the increased risk of a crash or injury to the vehicle occupants.
The dealer will add an addendum to the Owner’s Manual to vehicles in their inventory with updated instructions on how to operate the defroster under the subject conditions. Owners of 2018-2023 Nissan
LEAF vehicles will be mailed the addendum with the updated instructions beginning in April 2023, and owners of 2013-2017 Nissan
LEAF vehicles will be mailed the addendum with the updated instructions beginning in May 2023.
