VOLUNTARY SAFETY RECALL CAMPAIGN 2018-2023 LEAF; VCM REPROGRAM

INTRODUCTION

Nissan is conducting this voluntary safety recall campaign on certain specific model year 2018-2023 LEAF vehicles to reprogram the Vehicle Control Module (VCM). This service will be performed at no charge to the customer for parts or labor.

 

IDENTIFICATION NUMBER

Nissan has assigned identification number R23A6 to this campaign. This number must appear on all communication and documentation of any nature dealing with this campaign.

 

SERVICE PROCEDURE

NOTICE

To avoid damage to the Vehicle Control Module (VCM), only use VI2 for this repair. Do NOT use VI3 when performing this repair.

 

IMPORTANT: Before starting, make sure:

  • All C-III plus software updates (if any) have been
  • The CONSULT PC is connected to the internet (Wi-Fi or cable).

 

NOTICE

  • Make sure the VI2 is securely If the VI2 connection is loose during reprogramming, reprogramming may be interrupted and the VCM may be damaged.
  • Be sure to connect the AC If the CONSULT PC battery voltage drops during reprogramming, the process will be interrupted and the VCM may be damaged.
  • Do NOT use a standard battery charger for Hybrid/Electric vehicles. Make sure to connect the battery maintainer/smart charger securely to the 12V battery. Make sure the battery voltage stays between 12.0V and 13.5V during reprogramming. If the battery voltage does NOT stay between 0V and 13.5V during reprogramming, the VCM may be damaged.
  • Turn OFF all external Bluetooth® devices (e.g., cell phones, printers, etc.) within range of the CONSULT PC and the If Bluetooth® signal waves are within range of the CONSULT PC or VI2 during reprogramming, reprogramming may be interrupted and the VCM may be damaged.

 

  1. Connect the VI2 to the vehicle.

 

  1. Connect the AC Adapter to the CONSULT PC.

 

  1. Turn the EV system ON (Not Ready) mode, by pressing the power switch two (2) times WITHOUT depressing the brake pedal.
  • Turn the hazard warning lamps ON and leave them on for the duration of the reprogram.

 

  1. Start C-III plus.

 

  1. If prompted, select USA/CANADA Dealers from the drop down menu, and then select OK.

  

  1. If the Script Error shown in Figure 2 is present, select Yes.

 

  1. Wait for the VI2 to be recognized (Figure 3).
  • The serial number will display when the VI2 is recognized.

 

  1. Select Re/programming, Configuration.

 

  1. Check the box to confirm the precaution instructions have been read, and then select Next.

  1. Select Automatic Selection(VIN).

 

  1. Allow the VIN to be detected.
  • If the VIN is not automatically detected, Select Detect Vehicle.

 

  1. Confirm the VIN or Chassis #, Vehicle Name, and Model Year are correct for the vehicle you are working on, and then select Confirm.

 

  1. Verify the VIN displayed is correct for the vehicle you are working on, and then select Confirm.

 

  1. Select EV/HEV.
  • Scroll to page 2 to select EV/HEV.

 

  1. Select Reprogramming.

 

  1. Find the VCM Part Number and write it on the repair order, and then select Save.
  • This is the current Part Number (P/N).

 

  1. Compare the Part Number you wrote down in step 16 on page 8 to the numbers in the Current VCM Part Number column in Table A below.
  • If there is a match, proceed to step 18 on page 10 to continue the reprogramming procedure.
  • If there is not a match, reprogramming is not Skip to CLAIMS INFORMATION on the last page.

  1. Review the precaution instructions.

HINT: Use the arrows (if needed) to view and read all the precautions.

 

  1. Check the box to confirm the precaution instructions have been read, and then select Next.

 

  1. Select Next.

 

  1. Confirm the battery voltage result is OK, and then select Next.
  • If the battery voltage result is NG, verify the battery maintainer/smart charger is turned ON and is securely connected to the 12V battery.

 

  1. Confirm all items listed have a judgement of OK, and then select Start.
  • The reprogramming process will take approximately 15 minutes.
  • If any of the items shown in Figure 16 display a status of NG, verify the battery maintainer/smart charger is turned ON and is securely connected to the 12V battery, and ensure the vehicle is NOT in Ready mode.

 

  1. Once the screen in Figure 17 displays, the reprogramming is Select Next.
  • If the screen in Figure 17 does NOT display, (indicating that reprogramming did not complete), refer to VCM Recovery on page 16.

 

  1. Press the power switch one (1) time to turn the EV system OFF (Figure 18), then go to step 25 immediately.

 

  1. Press the power switch two (2) times to turn the EV system back on (Figure 19).
  • C3 plus will automatically proceed to Erasing DTCs.
  • If the current status of the ignition switch displayed on the screen differs from the status of the actual vehicle ignition switch, select Next to go to the next screen.

 

  1. Select Confirm.

 

  1. Select Home.

 

  1. Disconnect the battery maintainer/smart charger from the vehicle.

 

  1. Select Diagnosis (All Systems) and perform System

 

  1. Follow the on-screen instructions to Erase All DTCs.
  • Verify all DTCs erase normally.

 

  1. Turn the EV system OFF.

 

  1. Disconnect the VI2 from the DLC.

 

VCM Recovery: 

Do not disconnect the VI2 or shut down C-III plus if reprogramming does not complete. 

If reprogramming does not complete and the “!?” icon displays, as shown in Figure 23: 

  • Check battery voltage (12.0 V – 15.5 V).
  • EV system is ON (Not Ready).
  • External Bluetooth® devices are OFF.
  • All electrical loads are OFF.
  • Select Retry and follow the on screen instructions.
  • Retry may not go through on first attempt and can be selected more than once.

 

If reprogramming does not complete and the “X” icon displays, as shown in Figure 24: 

  • Check battery voltage (12.0 V – 15.5 V).
  • CONSULT A/C adapter is plugged in.
  • EV system is ON (Not Ready).
  • All C-III plus / VI2 cables are securely connected.
  • All C-III plus updates are installed.
  • Select Home, and restart the reprogram procedure from the beginning.

J2534-1 Re/Programming

 


Tutorial for Purchasing NERS Software

Software updated April 26, 2019 to version # 04.03.00. It is recommended the latest version of NERS be installed before connecting to a vehicle.

This NERS software supports reprogrammable Engine and Transmission control units from 1999 to 2019 model year vehicles, and 2005 MY and later VIN writing into ECUs, when using a Nissan validated pass-through device. Click the Reprogramming Tab for additional information on reprogramming. This software only provides ECU reprogramming, blank programming and VIN writing capability. It does not provide diagnostic or key programming capability. For Engine and Transmission control unit reprogramming and VIN writing capability on 2020 MY & newer, please use CONSULT-III plus or CONSULT-III plus R2R software.

Vehicle reprogramming requires the use of the following:

  • Nissan validated J2534-1 device
  • Nissan ECU Reprogramming Software (NERS)
  • Personal computer running Windows XP (SP2 or later) or Windows 7 or 10 64Bit
  • Applicable reprogram file

 

Nissan tested and validated the below listed devices. Nissan does not recommend the use of any other J2534-1 device not listed here.

How to find the proper J-2534 Reprogramming ECU file:

In order for you to locate the proper ECU file, you will need to look up the applicable Technical Services Bulletin(TSB) for your vehicle. Instructions in the TSB will pinpoint and advise you of the ECU part # to enter below.

September 2013, Nissan and Infiniti began the phase in of “Blank” Service Parts ECUs and TCMs. Depending upon the model and model year, replacement modules come WITHOUT software. When a replacement module is installed in an applicable vehicle for any reason, it will need to be programmed.

When you purchase a J-2534 Blank programming file, you will get a zip file containing a data file (.dat, .pdx, .xcal, .7z), a .csv or .xml file and a Reprog_readme.pdf. Please review the readme file for information on where to place the files in your PC.

 

How to find the proper J-2534 Blank Programming ECU file:

  • Obtain the blank ECU part number when you purchase the replacement ECU. Nissan’s and Infiniti’s parts catalog provides both the blank ECU part number and the ROM-DATA ID part number (after programming part number) to be used. Enter this blank ECU part number in the field below.

or

  • Using C-III plus software, retrieve the blank ECU part number from the new ECU. Enter this blank ECU part number in the field below.

  • Special Note: NERS Version 03.08 or higher supports Blank RWD, 5 speed TCM programming.
