IF YOU CONFIRM
The engine turns OFF or hesitates when accelerating from a stop during hot ambient temperatures (+100°F),
AND
The engine is able to be restarted.
ACTION
1. Refer to step 6 in the SERVICE PROCEDURE to see if this bulletin applies to the vehicle you are working on.
2. If this bulletin applies, reprogram the ECM.
3. For 2013 Versa Sedan only: If ECM reprogramming applies, determine if TCM reprogramming also applies.
- Refer to page 6 in the SERVICE PROCEDURE.
IMPORTANT: The purpose of ACTION (above) is to give you a quick idea of the work you will be performing. You MUST closely follow the entire SERVICE PROCEDURE as it contains information that is essential to successfully completing this repair.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE:
- For 2013 Versa Sedan only: This procedure may require reprogramming of the ECM and TCM which means most steps in this procedure may need to be done twice.
- Most instructions for reprogramming with CONSULT-III plus (C-III plus) are displayed on the CONSULT PC screen.
- If you are not familiar with the reprogramming procedure, click here. This will link you to the “CONSULT- III plus (C-III plus) Reprogramming” general procedure.
- Take the vehicle for a 10 minute drive in order to meet the following Idle Air Volume Learn (IAVL) conditions:
- Engine coolant temperature: 70 -100°C (158 – 212°F)
- Battery voltage: More than 12.9V (At idle)
- Transmission: Warmed up

- After reprogramming is complete, you will be required to perform Throttle Valve Closed Position, Idle Air Volume Learn, Accelerator Closed Position, and DTC erase.
CAUTION:

- Connect the CONSULT PC to the vehicle to begin the reprogramming procedure.
- Open / Start C-III plus.
- Wait for the plus VI to be recognized.
- Serial number will display when the plus VI is recognized.
- Select Re/programming, Configuration.

- Follow the on-screen instructions and navigate the C-III plus to the screen shown in Figure 2 on the next page.
- When you get to the screen shown in Figure 2, confirm this bulletin applies as follows:
A. Find the ECM Part Number and write it on the repair order.
NOTE: This is the current ECM Part Number (P/N).

For 2013 Versa Sedan with CVT only:
If ECM reprogramming applies, you may need to perform TCM reprogramming.
- If ECM reprogramming is needed, complete it first.
- When ECM reprogramming is complete, restart the reprogramming process for the TCM.
- When you get to step 6 on page 4, confirm TCM reprogramming is needed as follows:
NOTE: The screen in Figure 2 on page 4 will be similar for TCM reprogramming.
A. Find the TCM Part Number and write it on the repair order.
B. Compare the P/N you wrote down to the number in the Current TCM Part Number column in Table B, below.
- If there is a TCM P/N match, continue with TCM reprogramming procedure.
- If there is not a TCM P/N match, this procedure is complete.

- Follow the on-screen instructions to navigate C-III plus and reprogram the ECM.
NOTE:
- In some cases, more than one new P/N for reprogramming is available.
- In this case, the screen in Figure 3 displays.
- Select and use the reprogramming option that does not have the message “Caution! Use ONLY with NTBXX-XXX”.
- If you get this screen and it is blank (no reprogramming listed), it means there is no reprogramming available for this vehicle. Close C-III plus and refer back to ASIST for further diagnosis.

- When the screen in Figure 4 displays, reprogramming is complete.
NOTE: If the screen in Figure 4 does not display (reprogramming does not complete), refer to the information on the next page.
- Disconnect the battery charger from the vehicle.
- Select Next.

NOTE:
- In the next steps (page 10), you will perform Throttle Valve Closed Position, Idle Air Volume Learn, Accelerator Closed Position, and DTC erase.
- These operations are required before C-III plus will provide the final reprogramming confirmation report.
ECM Recovery
Do not disconnect plus VI or shut down C-III plus if reprogramming does not complete.
If reprogramming does not complete and the “!?” icon displays as shown in Figure 5:
- Check battery voltage (12.0–15.5 V).
- Ignition is ON, engine OFF.
- External Bluetooth® devices are OFF.
- All electrical loads are OFF.
- Select retry and follow the on screen instructions.
- “Retry” may not go through on first attempt and can be selected more than once.

If reprogramming does not complete and the “X” icon displays as shown in Figure 6:
- Check battery voltage (12.0 – 15.5 V).
- CONSULT A/C adapter is plugged in.
- Ignition is ON, engine OFF.
- Transmission is in Park.
- All C-III plus / VI cables are securely connected.
- All C-III plus updates are installed.
- Select Home, and restart the reprogram procedure from the beginning.

- Follow the on-screen instructions to perform the following:
- Throttle Valve Closed Position
- Idle Air Volume Learn (IAVL)
NOTE:
- Listed below are common conditions required for IAVL to complete.
- If IAVL does not complete within a few minutes, a condition may be out of range.
- Refer to the appropriate Electronic Service Manual (ESM) for specific conditions required for the vehicle you are working on.
- Engine coolant temperature: 70 -100° C (158 – 212°F)
- Battery voltage: More than 12.9V (At idle)
- Selector lever: P or N
- Electric load switch: OFF (Air conditioner, headlamp, rear window defogger)
- Steering wheel: Neutral (Straight-ahead position)
- Vehicle speed: Stopped
- Transmission: Warmed up
- Accelerator Pedal Close Position Learning
- Erase DTCs
Go to the next page.
- When the entire reprogramming process is complete, the screen in Figure 7 will display.
- Verify the before and after part numbers are different.
- Print a copy of this screen (Figure 7) and attach it to the repair order for warranty documentation.
- Select Confirm.

- Close C-III plus.
- Turn the ignition OFF.
- Disconnect the plus VI from the vehicle.
- Make sure the vehicle operates correctly and the MIL is OFF.
- If the MIL comes ON, go back to ASIST for further diagnostic information.
- Diagnosis and repairs beyond ECM reprogramming (and TCM reprogramming, if it applies) are not covered by this bulletin.

J2534-1 Re/Programming
Tutorial for Purchasing NERS Software
Software updated April 26, 2019 to version # 04.03.00. It is recommended the latest version of NERS be installed before connecting to a vehicle.
This NERS software supports reprogrammable Engine and Transmission control units from 1999 to 2019 model year vehicles, and 2005 MY and later VIN writing into ECUs, when using a Nissan validated pass-through device. Click the Reprogramming Tab for additional information on reprogramming. This software only provides ECU reprogramming, blank programming and VIN writing capability. It does not provide diagnostic or key programming capability. For Engine and Transmission control unit reprogramming and VIN writing capability on 2020 MY & newer, please use CONSULT-III plus or CONSULT-III plus R2R software.
Vehicle reprogramming requires the use of the following:
- Nissan
validated J2534-1 device - Nissan ECU Reprogramming Software (NERS)
- Personal computer running Windows XP (SP2 or later) or Windows 7 or 10 64Bit
- Applicable reprogram file
Nissan tested and validated the below listed devices. Nissan does not recommend the use of any other J2534-1 device not listed here.

September 2013, Nissan and Infiniti began the phase in of “Blank” Service Parts ECUs and TCMs. Depending upon the model and model year, replacement modules come WITHOUT software. When a replacement module is installed in an applicable vehicle for any reason, it will need to be programmed.
When you purchase a J-2534 Blank programming file, you will get a zip file containing a data file (.dat, .pdx, .xcal, .7z), a .csv or .xml file and a Reprog_readme.pdf. Please review the readme file for information on where to place the files in your PC.
How to find the proper J-2534 Blank Programming ECU file:
- Obtain the blank ECU part number when you purchase the replacement ECU. Nissan’s and Infiniti’s parts catalog provides both the blank ECU part number and the ROM-DATA ID part number (after programming part number) to be used. Enter this blank ECU part number in the field below.

- Using C-III plus software, retrieve the blank ECU part number from the new ECU. Enter this blank ECU part number in the field below.
