Summary

Nissan North America, Inc. (INFINITI) is recalling certain 2021 INFINITI Q50 and Q60 vehicles. After detecting rapid acceleration, the Engine Control Module (ECM) may incorrectly reduce engine power and reduce fuel supply to the engine.

 

Remedy

INFINITI will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the ECM software, free of charge. The recall began on May 25, 2021. Owners may contact INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200. INFINITI’s number for this recall is R20C5.

INFINITI is committed to safety, security, and satisfaction of our clients and their passengers.

INFINITI is conducting a Voluntary Recall and Emissions Campaign on certain INFINITI Model Year 2021 Q50 and Q60 vehicles to update the Engine Control Module (ECM) software.  The subject vehicles may have been manufactured with ECM software that could result in an engine stall while driving and increase the risk of a crash.

 

The current ECM software prevents the ECM from correctly reducing engine speed after an excessive torque detection.  As a result, upon detection of an excessive torque input, a separate software function stops the fuel injector driver operation, which can result in an engine stall.

 

***** What Retailers Should Do *****

    1. Verify if vehicles are affected by this Voluntary Recall and Emissions Campaign using Service Comm or DBS National Service History – Open Campaign I.D. R20C5
  • New Vehicles in retailer inventory can also be identified using DBS (Sales-> Vehicle Inventory, and filter by Open Campaign).
    • Refer to IPSB15-286 for additional information.

 

  1. Retailers must not sell, lease, trade, rent or loan any vehicles in retailer inventory affected by this recall and emissions campaign until after the vehicle has been remedied.

 

  1. Retailers should use ITB21-006 to remedy any vehicles subject to this campaign.

 

  1. Once repaired, the service department should submit the applicable warranty claim for the action performed so it can be closed on SERVICE COMM.

The remedy is reprogramming, no other parts are required for this campaign.

INFINITI may provide a courtesy vehicle for the client to use while their vehicle is being serviced. Courtesy vehicles are subject to availability and not guaranteed. The estimated percentage of vehicles involved with defect is approximately 0.59%.

 

Description of the Defect:

Certain INFINITI Q50 and Q60 vehicles may have been manufactured with a software issue that prevents the Engine Control Module (ECM) from correctly reducing engine speed after an excessive torque detection. Upon detection of an excessive torque input, the ECM should shut off fuel to reduce the engine speed.  However, due to the software issue, a separate software function stops the fuel injector driver input controller operation that can result in an engine stall while driving; which could lead to a crash.  The customer may experience a MIL ‘ON’ condition and reduced power, which may precede the engine stall.

 

Chronology of Principal Events:

February 2021 through March 2021 – In early February, Nissan initiated an investigation due to several field reports related to a Malfunction Indicator Lamp ‘MIL’ ON, reduced power and engine stall under certain conditions.  The first known issue occurred on December 7, 2020 on two incident vehicles.  Since that time, forty-two (42) total incidents occurred through February 2021. Nissan began an investigation into the reports to determine the cause of the issue.

 

The ECM in the subject vehicles contains a software function to prevent unintended acceleration based on monitoring torque input.  The investigation revealed that the software in the ECM prevented it from correctly reducing engine speed after an excessive torque detection.  As a result, the software causes the vehicle to go into limp-home mode (reducing engine power); the ‘MIL’ illuminates and the engine may stall while driving.  The vehicle can be restarted after engine stall and driven normally.

 

Nissan received one (1) report of an accident without injuries potentially related to this issue on January 5, 2021.

 

March 25, 2021 – Nissan determined that a safety defect may exist and decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall campaign.

 

Description of Corrective Action:

Retailers were notified on March 27, 2021.  Owners of all potentially affected vehicles will be notified beginning on May 25, 2021, to bring their vehicle to the retailer for repair.  The INFINITI retailer will reprogram the ECM software to the correct specification.

 

We will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy as the subject vehicles are under warranty.

J2534-1 Re/Programming

 


Tutorial for Purchasing NERS Software

Software updated April 26, 2019 to version # 04.03.00. It is recommended the latest version of NERS be installed before connecting to a vehicle.

This NERS software supports reprogrammable Engine and Transmission control units from 1999 to 2019 model year vehicles, and 2005 MY and later VIN writing into ECUs, when using a Nissan validated pass-through device. Click the Reprogramming Tab for additional information on reprogramming. This software only provides ECU reprogramming, blank programming and VIN writing capability. It does not provide diagnostic or key programming capability. For Engine and Transmission control unit reprogramming and VIN writing capability on 2020 MY & newer, please use CONSULT-III plus or CONSULT-III plus R2R software.

Vehicle reprogramming requires the use of the following:

  • Nissan validated J2534-1 device
  • Nissan ECU Reprogramming Software (NERS)
  • Personal computer running Windows XP (SP2 or later) or Windows 7 or 10 64Bit
  • Applicable reprogram file

 

Nissan tested and validated the below listed devices. Nissan does not recommend the use of any other J2534-1 device not listed here.

September 2013, Nissan and Infiniti began the phase in of “Blank” Service Parts ECUs and TCMs. Depending upon the model and model year, replacement modules come WITHOUT software. When a replacement module is installed in an applicable vehicle for any reason, it will need to be programmed.

When you purchase a J-2534 Blank programming file, you will get a zip file containing a data file (.dat, .pdx, .xcal, .7z), a .csv or .xml file and a Reprog_readme.pdf. Please review the readme file for information on where to place the files in your PC.

 

How to find the proper J-2534 Blank Programming ECU file:

  • Obtain the blank ECU part number when you purchase the replacement ECU. Nissan’s and Infiniti’s parts catalog provides both the blank ECU part number and the ROM-DATA ID part number (after programming part number) to be used. Enter this blank ECU part number in the field below.

  • Using C-III plus software, retrieve the blank ECU part number from the new ECU. Enter this blank ECU part number in the field below.
