Summary

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2021 Infiniti Q50, Q60, and QX80 vehicles. A software error may deactivate the audio/video control unit screen, preventing the rear-view image from displaying. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, “Rear Visibility.”

 

Remedy

Dealers will update the control unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 14, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan’s number for this recall is R21A9.

INFINITI is committed to safety, security, and satisfaction of our clients and their passengers. INFINITI has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transport Canada that it is recalling certain INFINITI Model Year 2021 Q50, Q60 and QX80 vehicles to reprogram the telematics control unit (TCU).

Due to a supplier error with the In Vehicle Connectivity (IVC) software within the TCU, when privacy mode is activated the Accessory (ACC) power may turn off, cutting power to the Audio/Video (AV) control unit. Privacy mode disables data transfer related to the vehicle’s connected services. If the client enables privacy mode and if the vehicle is not started in the following 14 days, the rear view monitor/navigation screen/multi-function control touch screen cannot be operated upon engine start. In this condition, the rear view image cannot be displayed, which does not comply with S5.5.6 and S6.2.6 of FMVSS 111; Rear Visibility. If the rear view image is not available while backing up, it may impair their rearward vision and increase the risk of a crash.

Affected vehicles are subject to stop sale and are either currently in retailer inventory or assigned and in transit to the retailer.

INFINITI will begin notifying owners of all potentially affected vehicles in September 2021 via U.S. Mail.

 

Q: Is my vehicle safe to drive?

If your vehicle is subject to this campaign, you will receive an Owner Notification letter from INFINITI, which will provide instructions on how to remedy your vehicle. Affected owners are encouraged to have their vehicles remedied as soon as possible upon notification.

 

Q: Is there anything owners can do to mitigate this condition?

No.

 

Q: Are parts readily available?

The remedy is reprogramming, no other parts are required for this campaign.

 

Q: Is there any charge for the repair?

No. The remedy, will be performed for the client free of charge for parts and labor.

 

Q: Will a courtesy vehicle be provided while the retailer is servicing the vehicle?

INFINITI may provide a courtesy vehicle for the client to use while their vehicle is being serviced. Courtesy vehicles are subject to availability and not guaranteed. Please check with your retailer for availability and further details. If parts replacement is needed, rental is available while parts are on order.

Description of the Noncompliance:

In the affected INFINITI Q50, Q60 and QX80 vehicles, the customer can activate privacy mode to disable data transfer related to the vehicles’ connected services.  Due to a supplier error with the In-Vehicle Connectivity (IVC) software, when privacy mode is activated, the ACC power is turned off cutting power to the Audio/Video (AV) control unit.  If the customer enables privacy mode and if the vehicle is not started in the following 14 days, the rear view monitor/navigation screen/multifunction control touch screen cannot be operated upon engine start.  With the screen inactive, the rear view image cannot be displayed, which does not comply with S5.5.6 and S6.2.6 of FMVSS 111; Rear Visibility.  If the rear view image is not available while backing up, it could lead to an increased risk of a crash.

 

Basis for Determination of the Existence of a Noncompliance

On February 2, 2021, Nissan identified a potential concern involving privacy mode activation and interruption of power to the AV control unit. Nissan began an investigation into the issue.

 

March 7, 2021 – A Nissan dealer in Russia observed that the rear view image was not being displayed after the ignition was turned ON. The vehicle in question was a MY20 Nissan QX80. The issue was reported to Nissan for further analysis.

 

April 2021 – Nissan received a separate market claim in the U.S. on April 2, 2021, which reported the infotainment screen did not deactivate immediately when the engine was turned off and the door was opened. In this case, the vehicle was a MY21 INFINITI Q50.
Nissan issued a Technical Service Bulletin [ITB21-010] on April 28, 2021 to address this condition of the infotainment screen failing to deactivate.

 

May 2021 through June 2021 – Nissan continued to study the reports to determine if they were connected. During the investigation, Nissan identified the IVC software as a potential source for both conditions described in the reports. Nissan evaluated the issue and any potential impact under FMVSS regulations.

 

July 2021 – As a result of the investigation, Nissan determined that the IVC software error could potentially cut the ACC power to the Audio/Video control unit under specific conditions. If privacy mode is enabled and the vehicle is not started in the following 14 days, the rear view monitor/navigation screen/multifunction control touch screen cannot be operated upon engine start.

 

July 27, 2021 – Based on the foregoing, Nissan decided to conduct a noncompliance recall to remedy affected vehicles. Nissan is aware of the two (2) reports described above and is not aware of any injuries related to this condition.

 

Description of Corrective Action:

Nissan will notify all owners of potentially affected vehicles beginning September 14, 2021.
Dealers were notified August 3, 2021. Dealers will reprogram the TCU with updated IVC software.

We will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy as the subject vehicles are under warranty.

J2534-1 Re/Programming

 


Tutorial for Purchasing NERS Software

Software updated April 26, 2019 to version # 04.03.00. It is recommended the latest version of NERS be installed before connecting to a vehicle.

This NERS software supports reprogrammable Engine and Transmission control units from 1999 to 2019 model year vehicles, and 2005 MY and later VIN writing into ECUs, when using a Nissan validated pass-through device. Click the Reprogramming Tab for additional information on reprogramming. This software only provides ECU reprogramming, blank programming and VIN writing capability. It does not provide diagnostic or key programming capability. For Engine and Transmission control unit reprogramming and VIN writing capability on 2020 MY & newer, please use CONSULT-III plus or CONSULT-III plus R2R software.

Vehicle reprogramming requires the use of the following:

  • Nissan validated J2534-1 device
  • Nissan ECU Reprogramming Software (NERS)
  • Personal computer running Windows XP (SP2 or later) or Windows 7 or 10 64Bit
  • Applicable reprogram file

 

Nissan tested and validated the below listed devices. Nissan does not recommend the use of any other J2534-1 device not listed here.

September 2013, Nissan and Infiniti began the phase in of “Blank” Service Parts ECUs and TCMs. Depending upon the model and model year, replacement modules come WITHOUT software. When a replacement module is installed in an applicable vehicle for any reason, it will need to be programmed.

When you purchase a J-2534 Blank programming file, you will get a zip file containing a data file (.dat, .pdx, .xcal, .7z), a .csv or .xml file and a Reprog_readme.pdf. Please review the readme file for information on where to place the files in your PC.

 

How to find the proper J-2534 Blank Programming ECU file:

  • Obtain the blank ECU part number when you purchase the replacement ECU. Nissan’s and Infiniti’s parts catalog provides both the blank ECU part number and the ROM-DATA ID part number (after programming part number) to be used. Enter this blank ECU part number in the field below.

  • Using C-III plus software, retrieve the blank ECU part number from the new ECU. Enter this blank ECU part number in the field below.
