Summary

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, 2015-2016 Murano Hybrid, and 2014-2017 INFINITI QX60 Hybrid vehicles. The Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM) software may shut down the hybrid system and the engine under certain conditions, causing a loss of drive power.

Remedy

Dealers will reprogram the HPCM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 31, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200. Nissan’s numbers for this recall are R21B4 and R21B5.

***** Campaign Summary *****

Nissan is issuing a Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign on specific 2014-2015 Pathfinder Hybrid and 2015-2016 Murano Hybrid vehicles identified in Service Comm to reprogram the Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM) with updated software to enable Electric Vehicle (EV) only operation in the event of failsafe mode activation.

The Hybrid Powertrain Control Module (HPCM) on certain Nissan Murano and Pathfinder hybrid vehicles may contain software that could cause an engine stall under certain conditions.  In the event of bearing damage, the HPCM detects the overheat condition and initiates failsafe mode, which cuts drive power to both the engine and electric motor.  Without drivetrain power, the customer may experience an engine stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.

Affected vehicles are subject to stop sale.

***** Release Schedule *****

Parts

  • Updated Engine Control Module (ECM) software is now available on ASIST.
  • No other parts are required for this campaign.
    • Additional coverage is available in the event the ECM fails during reprogramming.
      • Dealers should contact the Warranty Claims Call Center (800-2587008, option 7) for additional information.

Chronology of Principal Events:

March 2021 – Nissan became aware of reports of engine stall and power shutdown in the China market involving the subject vehicles.

April 2021 through July 2021 – Nissan focused its investigation on the motor and continuously variable transmission operation, in addition to the failsafe mode activation of the hybrid powertrain control module (HPCM). As part of the investigation, Nissan initiated a parts collection activity in China.

The analysis revealed that the HPCM failsafe mode might potentially disable drive power to the engine and electric motor in the event of bearing damage.

August 2021 to September 2021 – Nissan performed a safety assessment of the failsafe mode to evaluate the potential conditions that could result from a power shutdown of the hybrid powertrain. If both the engine and electric motor are disabled, a stall condition may occur. This failsafe mode condition also reduces power steering assist and braking assist.

In addition, Nissan conducted a warranty review to determine any incidents in markets outside of China. Nissan identified thirty-five (35) claims related to the subject condition in the U.S. market.

September 27, 2021 – Based on the foregoing, Nissan decided to conduct a safety recall campaign to remedy potentially affected vehicles.

Reprogramming

J2534-1 Re/Programming

Tutorial for Purchasing NERS Software

Software updated April 26, 2019 to version # 04.03.00. It is recommended the latest version of NERS be installed before connecting to a vehicle.

This NERS software supports reprogrammable Engine and Transmission control units from 1999 to 2019 model year vehicles, and 2005 MY and later VIN writing into ECUs, when using a Nissan validated pass-through device. Click the Reprogramming Tab for additional information on reprogramming. This software only provides ECU reprogramming, blank programming and VIN writing capability. It does not provide diagnostic or key programming capability. For Engine and Transmission control unit reprogramming and VIN writing capability on 2020 MY & newer, please use CONSULT-III plus or CONSULT-III plus R2R software.

Vehicle reprogramming requires the use of the following:

  • Nissan validated J2534-1 device
  • Nissan ECU Reprogramming Software (NERS)
  • Personal computer running Windows XP (SP2 or later) or Windows 7 or 10 64Bit
  • Applicable reprogram file

Nissan tested and validated the below listed devices. Nissan does not recommend the use of any other J2534-1 device not listed here.
