Nissan
is committed to the safety and security of our customers and their passengers. Nissan
has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transport Canada that it is recalling certain specific MY2021-2022 Nissan
Rogue vehicles to address a potential rear seatbelt issue.
A tooling issue was discovered during the supplier’s seat belt assembly process, which since has been corrected, that resulted in non-uniform bending of the internal retractor base bracket. As a result, the internal spool can bind, which could cause difficulty or inability to extract or retract the seat belt properly.
Dealers will inspect the lot code on both left-hand and right-hand rear seatbelt retractors and, if necessary, will replace either one or both retractors.

Description of the Noncompliance:
During a routine audit, Nissan
identified the rear seat belts for the left-hand and right-hand rear seats were not retracting properly. In this condition, the seat belt assembly would not comply with S7.1 of FMVSS 208; Occupant crash protection and S4.3 of FMVSS 209; Seat Belt standards.
Basis for Determination of the Existence of a Noncompliance
On April 14, 2022, during a routine quality audit, a Nissan
technician found the rear seat belts not retracting properly on a MY2022 Rouge vehicle and alerted the Supplier of the concern.
Together with Nissan
, the supplier launched an investigation.
May 2022 – During the Tier 1 supplier’s (ZF) investigation, a tooling issue was discovered within the seat belt assembly process that caused non-uniform bending of the internal retractor base bracket. As a result, the internal spool can bind, leading to difficulty or inability to extract or retract the seat belt properly.
June 2022 through August 2022 – Nissan
conducted a safety assessment to evaluate the regulatory impact of the subject condition. During this time, Nissan
worked with the supplier to conduct testing on multiple seat belt fixtures to duplicate the concern.
Nissan
completed its safety assessment and concluded that although the seat belt assemblies would perform as intended in an accident and restrain the occupant, the subject seat belt assemblies did not meet certain regulatory requirements for seat belt fitting, ALR retention, and retraction force.
August 25, 2022 – Nissan
decided to conduct a Voluntary Recall to inspect all potentially affected vehicles and repair if necessary.
Nissan
is not aware of any warranty claims attributed to the subject condition.
Description of Corrective Action:
Nissan
will notify all owners of affected vehicles by October 27, 2022. Dealers will be notified on September 7, 2022. Dealers will inspect both left-hand and right-hand rear seat belts and replace as necessary. All inspections and repairs will be performed free of charge for parts and labor.
Nissan
will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy for the subject vehicles because they are still under warranty.
Copy of Notices:
Copies of all notices will be provided to NHTSA as they become available.
