2002 Q45 FRONT BRAKE NOISE WHEN COLD

APPLIED VEHICLE: 2002 Q45 (F50)

SERVICE INFORMATION

The vehicle’s front brakes may have a grind/groan noise when the brakes are cold (after sitting for a few hours). This bulletin applies if the vehicle has a grind/groan noise coming from the front brakes during the first few brake applications as the vehicle comes to a stop, from low speeds, when the brakes are cold.  This bulletin does not address a “creep-groan” noise.  A creep-groan noise may occur when the vehicle is stopped, the brakes are released slightly and the vehicle creeps forward.

If this brake grind/groan noise occurs, it’s possible to duplicate it when the brakes are cold during a test drive in normal traffic conditions.  If this grind/groan noise occurs before coming to a complete stop (i.e., it is not a creep groan described above), use the Service Procedure in this bulletin to resolve the incident.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Verify the noise exists under the conditions described in the Service Information above.
  2. Machine the front rotors. Only a very light cut to the rotor surface is needed.
    • For rotor machining, Use an on-car brake lathe (Pro-Cut PFM900 or equivalent).
    • See the Service Manual (page BR-21 and 22) for rotor inspection.
    • Make sure all metal shavings/dust is cleaned from the ABS sensor and ABS sensor rotor when the brake rotor machining is complete.

WARNING:  Clean the brakes with appropriate cleaner to minimize the hazard of airborne particles or other materials.

CAUTION:

  • With the caliper removed from the rotor, do not depress the brake pedal or the piston will pop out.
  • Be careful not to damage the piston boot or get oil on the rotor.
  • Suspend the caliper assembly with wire if needed, so as not to stretch the brake hose.
  1. Replace the front brake pads with the parts listed in the Parts Information section of this bulletin.

NOTE:

  • Refer to the Service Manual (page BR-18 and 19) for the front disc brake pad replacement procedure.
  • Carefully monitor the brake fluid level because brake fluid will return to the reservoir when pushing the piston back into the caliper.
  • In most cases the brake pad hardware (shims and pad retainers) will be reused. Inspect brake pad hardware parts to confirm there is no rust, peeling coating, or other issues. Replace if necessary.
  • Use PBC grease (Nissan P/N 99990-00939P) between the brake pad and shim, and between the shim and piston to reduce potential noise. Use it “sparingly” (do not use too much). DO NOT GET ANY PBC GREASE ON THE BRAKE PAD “FRICTION” SURFACES.
