***** Campaign Summary *****
Nissan
is reclassifying the previously announced Quality Action (PMA11) as a Voluntary Safety Recall Campaign. Nissan
is committed to the safety and security of our customers and their passengers, and has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that it is recalling certain specific MY2022 Nissan
Sentra vehicles to address a potential water intrusion issue.
During periods of heavy rain, there is a possibility of water leaking through the front left cowl area onto the driver’s side floor, which can potentially lead to an increased risk of corrosion specifically at the TH80 connector. If corrosion develops between the terminals within the TH80 connector, it can short circuit potentially resulting in the following conditions, increasing the risk of accident, injury and property damage:
- Inoperative washer motor, VDC, tail lamps, turn lamps, hazard lamps, reverse lamps or airbags
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
- No start
- Engine start or shift gear without application of brake pedal
- Stop lamps remain illuminated
- Limited acceleration
- Thermal Incident
Dealers will apply sealer to the driver’s side cowl area and inspect the TH80 connector for signs of humidity or corrosion. If moisture or corrosion is detected, the dealer will replace the main harness and engine room harness.

Description of the Defect:
Affected vehicles may have a missing or improper seal in the driver side cowl area. In this condition, during periods of heavy rain, there is a possibility of water intrusion through the front left cowl area onto the driver’s side floor, which can potentially lead to an increased risk of corrosion of electrical components. If corrosion develops in the main body harness to engine room harness connector, it can result in electrical short circuit and/or thermal damage to the connector.
In case of an electrical short circuit driver’s may experience the following conditions: the washer motor, VDC, tail lamps, hazard lamps, reverse lamps, or airbags may be inoperative; the tail lamps may remain illuminated; Malfunction indicator light (MIL) illuminated; the engine may not start; acceleration may be limited; or the engine may start or transmission may be shifted without applying the brake pedal. In rare cases, a fire could potentially occur. These conditions could increase risk of accident and injury.
Chronology of Principal Events:
On September 27, 2022, a plant technician noticed water accumulation on the front left-hand floor of a MY22 Nissan
Sentra under simulated heavy rain conditions. Nissan
initiated an investigation.
End of September 2022 through early October 2022 – Nissan
discovered missing or improperly applied sealer in the engine room at the driver’s side cowl area. A vehicle audit conducted at the plant identified 579 MY22 Sentra affected vehicles out of a total of 693 audited. These vehicles were repaired at the plant prior to shipment.
From the audit, it was found that a new technician who started working at Nissan
on September 21, 2022, was responsible for the defect. Inadequate supervision and failure to review the sealer application standards resulted in incorrect application by the new technician.
October 6, 2022 – Nissan
launched a dealer quality hold.
October 14, 2022 – Nissan
launched a dealer quality action to inspect and, if necessary, reseal the engine room sealer application on 418 MY22 Nissan
Sentra vehicles.
Late October 2022 through December 2022 – Nissan
investigated the potential impact of water intrusion through the cowl seal, including into the main harness and engine room harness connector.
January 2023 to June 2023 – Nissan
initiated a safety assessment of potential risks from damage to the main harness and engine room harness connector. It was determined that corrosion in the connector could lead to various electrical issues and/or a potential thermal risk. These include inoperative washer motor, VDC, tail lamps, turn lamps, hazard lamps, or reverse lamps. Additionally, the hazard telltale light may flash rapidly on the com bi meter, the Airbag Warning Lamp may be illuminated, and/or the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may illuminate. In some cases the customer may not be able to start their engine, or the customer may be able to start the engine or shift gears without application of brake pedal, the stop lamps could remain illuminated, and acceleration may be limited. In rare cases, there is the potential for a thermal incident to occur.
June 5, 2023 – Nissan
decided to conduct a Voluntary Safety Recall of all potentially affected vehicles.
Nissan
is not aware of any warranty claims or alleged accidents or injuries attributed to this condition.
Description of Corrective Action:
Dealers will be notified beginning June 14, 2023. Owners of all potentially affected vehicles will be notified beginning July 26, 2023. Dealers will reseal the driver side cowl seal and inspect the main body harness to engine room harness connector for signs of moisture or corrosion. If moisture or corrosion is detected, the main harness and engine room harness will be replaced. The repair timing is under final confirmation. All repairs will be performed free of charge for parts and labor. Nissan
will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy since the subject vehicles are under warranty.
