Description of the Defect:
On affected z vehicles, the left-hand front bumper reinforcement clip might become loose due to fasteners that may not have been torqued to specification during the manufacturing process. As a result, there is a risk that the pop-up engine hood may not operate as designed in the event of a frontal pedestrian collision. The pop-up engine hood is designed to activate and raise the rear end of the hood in certain frontal collisions to help reduce impact to the head of a pedestrian. If this condition occurs, it may increase the risk of injury to the pedestrian in the event of such an accident.
Chronology of Principal Events:
April 74, 2023 – A plant technician noticed looseness in the left-hand front bumper reinforcement clip of a MY2024 Nissan
z during a routine paint repair. Nissan
initiated an investigation.
Mid-April 2023 through May 2023 – Nissan
discovered the tightening torque for the left hand front bumper clip could be inadvertently re-set below the specified threshold. Nissan
implemented production countermeasures to prevent incorrect torque adjustment. Nissan
determined that the inadvertent torque adjustment occurred due to a unique combination of the dial-type torque tool and line-side storage receptacle.
June 2023 through September 2023 – Nissan
investigated the potential effect of looseness in the left hand front bumper reinforcement clip. The investigation found that looseness in the left-hand front bumper clip can cause reduced rigidity in the front bumper, potentially affecting the proper functioning of the left-hand pedestrian detection sensor and the popup engine hood feature.
October 73, 2023 – Nissan
determined this condition may not comply with certain regulatory requirements in Japan.
October 20, 2023 – Out of abundance of caution, Nissan
decided to conduct a Voluntary Safety Recall of all potentially affected vehicles.
Nissan
is not aware of any warranty claims, accident or injuries related to the subject condition.
Description of Corrective Action:
Dealers will be notified of the recall beginning October 27, 2023. Beginning on December 7, 2023, owners of all potentially affected vehicles will be notified to bring their z to a Nissan
dealer for repair. Dealers will be instructed to re-torque the fasteners on the left hand front bumper reinforcement clip. All repairs will be performed free of charge for parts and labor and may take up to one (1) hour to complete.
Nissan
will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy since the subject vehicles are under warranty.
