INTRODUCTION
Nissan is conducting this voluntary safety recall campaign on certain specific model year
2005-2012 Pathfinder, and 2005-2013 Frontier and Xterra vehicles, to inspect and, if
necessary, replace the Driver Air Bag Cover. This service will be performed at no charge to
the customer for parts or labor.
IDENTIFICATION NUMBER
Nissan has assigned identification number PC945 and PC948 to this campaign. This
number must appear on all communication and documentation of any nature dealing with
this campaign.
DEALER RESPONSIBILITY
It is the dealer’s responsibility to check Service COMM or Dealer Business Systems (DBS)
National Service History for the campaign status on each vehicle falling within the range of
this voluntary safety recall which for any reason enters the service department. This
includes vehicles purchased from private parties or presented by transient (tourist) owners
and vehicles in a dealer’s inventory. Federal law requires that new vehicles in dealer
inventory which are the subject of a safety recall must be corrected prior to sale.
Failure to do so can result in civil penalties by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration. While federal law applies only to new vehicles, Nissan strongly
encourages dealers to correct any used vehicles in their inventory before they are retailed.

When ordering, keep in mind that the tool part number prefix has changed from “J” to “NI”.
For example, J-52352 is now NI-52352.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Remove the Driver Air Bag Module Assembly from the Vehicle
IMPORTANT: Follow all cautions, warnings, and notices in the ESM when working on or
near the SRS, such as an air bag.
Handle interior trim carefully to avoid damage. Work with clean hands and clean tools to
avoid dirt and stains. Use protective covers as needed.
1. Write down the radio settings.

2. Turn the ignition OFF.
3. Disconnect both battery cables, negative cable first.
4. Wait at least 3 minutes.
5. Remove the Driver Air Bag Module assembly.
 Refer to the ESM: H: RESTRAINTS > SR – SRS Airbag > REMOVAL AND
INSTALLATION > DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE > Removal and Installation
6. Attach the Quick Scan Tool to a CONSULT PC’s USB port.

7. Open ASIST on the CONSULT PC.
8. On the left side of the ASIST main menu, select TECH SUPPORT INFO, and then
select Bulletin Support Items.

9. Select CLICK HERE… next to PC944/PC945/PC946/ PC947/PC948/PC949 –
DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE.

11. Once the Serial Number field is populated, verify the serial number entered in the
box matches the serial number on the Driver Air Bag Module, and then select Submit.
 If the result is OK, the Driver Air Bag Cover does not require replacement; skip to
step 31 on page 15 to reinstall the Driver Air Bag Module.
 If the result is NG (Figure 5), proceed to step 12 on page 6 to replace the Driver
Air Bag Cover.

10. Using the Quick Scan Tool, scan the
bar code above the Driver Air Bag

HINT:
o Make sure the serial number
label is clean.
o Hold the Quick Scan Tool about
six (6) inches away from the
serial number label.
o Hold down the trigger until the
Quick Scan Tool is finished
scanning the serial number
label.
o Some serial number labels may
not scan quickly.
o If needed, the serial number
can be entered manually.

Remove the Driver Air Bag Cover
IMPORTANT: Be careful not to damage the Driver Air Bag Module during Driver Air Bag
Cover removal, as the supply of replacement Driver Air Bag Modules is limited and
replacement requires authorization under this campaign.
12. Using a pair of suitable side cutters, cut the plastic hoop wall of the Driver Air Bag
Cover diagonally to the bottom of the Driver Air Bag Module housing hook, as shown
in Figure 6.
IMPORTANT: The Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks are fragile. Be careful not to
apply any unnecessary force to the Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks.

13. Using a pair of suitable needle nose pliers, grab and pinch the cut hoop wall plastic
next to the Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks and twist counter-clockwise to
remove the cut plastic from under the Driver Air Bag Module housing hook, as shown
in Figure 7.

14. Perform steps 12 and 13 on page 6 for
the other nine (9) Driver Air Bag Cover
locking tabs.
IMPORTANT: Make sure that all cut
plastic material is out of the way of the
Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks.
15. Place the Driver Air Bag Module
assembly on a clean, flat, cloth
covered surface, and then lift the
Driver Air Bag Cover off the Driver Air
Bag Module.

Inspect the Driver Air Bag Module for Damage
16. Inspect the emblem inside of the removed Driver Air Bag Cover.
 If both emblem post heads and metal clip are present, proceed to step 17.
 If any of the emblem post heads or metal clip are missing, inspect the Driver Air
Bag Module for the missing parts and remove them before proceeding to step 17.
To avoid the risk of death or severe personal injury, ensure that the metal clip or
emblem post heads are not in the Driver Air Bag Module. Loose components can
become projectiles if the Air Bag deploys.
17. Inspect the Driver Air Bag Module for any damage to the housing hooks.
 If none of the Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks are damaged (Figure 12), the
Driver Air Bag Module does not require replacement. Proceed to step 18 on
page 9.
 If any of the Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks are damaged (Figure 13), the
Driver Air Bag Module must be replaced. Skip to step 20 on page 10 for WCC
Authorization for Driver Air Bag Module replacement.

18. Inspect the cushion tear seams of the Driver Air Bag Module for any damage, objects
or debris.
To avoid the risk of death or severe personal injury, ensure that there are not any
emblem post heads, metal clip, or debris in the Driver Air Bag Module cushion. Loose
components can become projectiles if the Air Bag deploys.

19. Inspect the Driver Air Bag Module cushion pack for any damage (snags, cuts,
scrapes) from the disassembly process.
 If the Driver Air Bag Module cushion pack and the cushion tear seams do not have
any signs of damage, the Driver Air Bag Module does not require replacement.
Skip to step 21 on page 11.
 If the Driver Air Bag Module cushion pack or the cushion tear seams have any
signs of damage, the Driver Air Bag Module must be replaced. Proceed to step 20
on page 10 for WCC Authorization for Driver Air Bag Module replacement.

WCC Authorization (Only Required For Driver Air Bag Module Replacement)
20. Take a clear digital picture of the Repair Order and the damage to the Driver Air Bag
Module.
IMPORTANT: The Repair Order and the damage to the Driver Air Bag Module MUST
be in the same photo.
HINT: The picture file type must be JPEG, PNG, or PDF.
a. Send the photo to: claims-inspections@nissan-usa.com
o Include the following information in the title:
 Campaign ID#
 Dealer Code
 VIN
 Driver Air Bag Serial Number
b. Contact the Nissan Warranty Call Center (WCC) at 1-800-258-7008, option 7.
c. WCC will need to provide an approval for the Driver Air Bag Module.
o If WCC approves replacement of the Driver Air Bag Module, the approval
number must be included in the parts order.
o If WCC does NOT approve the replacement of the Driver Air Bag Module,
follow specific instructions provided by WCC.

Install the New Driver Air Bag Cover onto the Driver Air Bag Module
21. Inspect the new Driver Air Bag Cover and ensure there is no debris inside the Driver
Air Bag Cover.
22. Place the Driver Air Bag Module assembly on a clean, flat, cloth covered surface, with
the cushion pack facing up and the bar code label located at the 6 o’clock position, as
shown in Figure 16.

23. Place the new Driver Air Bag Cover on the Driver Air Bag Module.
 Position the flat (bottom) part of the Driver Air Bag Cover at the 6 o’clock positon
so it is perpendicular with the Driver Air Bag Module bar code label, as shown in
Figure 17.

24. Ensure the Driver Air Bag Cover locking tabs are aligned with the Driver Air Bag
Module housing hooks, and then compress the Driver Air Bag Cover onto the Driver
Air Bag Module until all ten (10) of the Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks are
engaged in the Driver Air Bag Cover windows (Figure 20).
IMPORTANT:
o If any of the ten (10) locking tabs get stuck against the Driver Air Bag Module
housing hooks and begin to bend when installing the Driver Air Bag Cover, use
a small flat blade screwdriver to move the Driver Air Bag Cover locking tab(s)
away from the Driver Air Bag Module housing hook(s).
o Verify all Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks are correctly seated in each of
the Driver Air Bag Cover windows, before proceeding to step 25.

25. Slowly pull the Driver Air Bag Module and the Driver Air Bag Cover apart to lock all
ten (10) Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks into each Driver Air Bag Cover locking
tab.

26. Inspect the perimeter of the Driver Air Bag Cover to ensure the Driver Air Bag Module
cushion is not pinched between the Driver Air Bag Cover and the Driver Air Bag
Module.
27. Inspect all ten (10) Driver Air Bag Cover locking tabs to ensure they are fully engaged
to the Driver Air Bag Module housing hooks, and then mark each one using a suitable
paint pen to acknowledge verification.

28. Inspect all four (4) horn effort springs to ensure they are fully seated on their posts,
and then mark each of them using a suitable paint pen to acknowledge verification.
