Production issues during the welding operations for the subject seat frames at the supplier may have resulted in insufficient weld conditions, which may separate. If a weld separates, it may cause an audible rattling in the seat back frame. Further, the seat back may fail in the event of a crash and potentially increase the risk of injury.
Chronology of Principal Events
July 26, 2021 – a Nissan
test driver noticed a rattle noise originating from the second row captain’s chair left-hand seat on a Model Year 2022 Pathfinder. Nissan
began an investigation into the issue and found the bracket that joins the seat back frame to the lower seat cushion had a separated weld. Nissan
notified the supplier of its findings and the supplier initiated an internal investigation.
July 2021 to August 2021 – Nissan
conducted a yard audit at the Smyrna plant inspecting 2,055 welds on the second row captain’s chair left-hand seat frames and found 162 affected seats. Nissan
replaced the suspect seats. During this time, the supplier identified a weld nozzle may have moved out-of-position and a countermeasure was implemented in production.
The supplier and Nissan
continued their respective investigations. During this time, both Nissan
and the supplier conducted yard audits and inventory inspections. These combined efforts identified additional welding process issues that affected the second row seats. The supplier implemented process changes and updated work instructions to prevent recurrence. Nissan
expanded its safety assessment to include all welding process issues that were identified during the investigation.
September 2021 – Nissan
concluded its safety assessment which determined the seat frame welds may separate. In this condition, the seat back may fail in the event of a crash and potentially increase the risk of injury.
September 16, 2021 – Nissan
decided to conduct a Voluntary Safety Recall to inspect, and remedy if necessary, all potentially affected vehicles.
Nissan
is not aware of any warranty claims attributed to either condition.
Description of Corrective Action:
Nissan
will notify all owners of potentially affected vehicles by November 19, 2021. Dealers will be notified September 24, 2021. Dealers will inspect the second row seat frame welds, and the seat assemblies will be replaced as necessary.
We will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy as the subject vehicles are under warranty.
Copy of Notices:
Copies of all notices will be provided to NHTSA as they become available.

Description of the Defect: Production issues during the welding operations for the subject seat frames at the supplier may have resulted in insufficient weld conditions, which may separate. If a weld separates, it may cause an audible rattling in the seat back frame. Further, the seat back may fail in the event of a crash and potentially increase the risk of injury. 6. Chronology of Principal Events July 26, 2021 – a Nissan test driver noticed a rattle noise originating from the second row captain’s chair left-hand seat on a Model Year 2022 Pathfinder. Nissan began an investigation into the issue and found the bracket that joins the seat back frame to the lower seat cushion had a separated weld. Nissan notified the supplier of its findings and the supplier initiated an internal investigation. July 2021 to August 2021 – Nissan conducted a yard audit at the Smyrna plant inspecting 2,055 welds on the second row captain’s chair left-hand seat frames and found 162 affected seats. Nissan replaced the suspect seats. During this time, the supplier identified a weld nozzle may have moved out-of-position and a countermeasure was implemented in production. The supplier and Nissan continued their respective investigations. During this time, both Nissan and the supplier conducted yard audits and inventory inspections. These combined efforts identified additional welding process issues that affected the second row seats. The supplier implemented process changes and updated work instructions to prevent recurrence. Nissan expanded its safety assessment to include all welding process issues that were identified during the investigation. September 2021 – Nissan concluded its safety assessment which determined the seat frame welds may separate. In this condition, the seat back may fail in the event of a crash and potentially increase the risk of injury. September 16, 2021 – Nissan decided to conduct a Voluntary Safety Recall to inspect, and remedy if necessary, all potentially affected vehicles. Nissan is not aware of any warranty claims attributed to either condition. 7. Description of Corrective Action: Nissan will notify all owners of potentially affected vehicles by November 19, 2021. 8. Copy of Notices: Copies of all notices will be provided to NHTSA as they become available.
