Summary
Nissan
North America, Inc. (Nissan
) is recalling certain 2022 Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed trucks. The tow hitch was not installed, compromising the structural integrity of the fuel tank in the event of a rear crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 301, “Fuel System Integrity.”
Remedy
Dealers will install the tow hitch and harness kit, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 16, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan
customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan
’s number for this recall is PC855.

is committed to the safety and security of our customers and their passengers. Nissan
has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the previously announced quality action (PC843), for new vehicle inventory, is being reclassified as a Voluntary Recall Campaign. Dealers will install a tow hitch receiver and trailer tow harness kit on 22 specific MY2022 Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed vehicles identified in Service Comm and DBS National Service History.
Certain Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed models were produced and sold without a tow hitch installed. Without a rear tow hitch, in the event of a crash, affected vehicles could experience leaf spring contact with the fuel tank, which could potentially result in a fuel leak, increasing the risk of injury. Due to a production error that has since been corrected, certain Model Year 2022 Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed vehicles were assembled without a tow hitch installed. Without the rear tow hitch, in the event of a rear collision, affected vehicles could experience leaf spring contact with the fuel tank. This contact could potentially result in a fuel leak, increasing the risk of injury. In this condition, the vehicle would not comply with S6.2 (b) of FMVSS 301.
- Basis for Determination of the Existence of a Noncompliance
In early September 2021, Nissan
determined that the tow hitch package was not being installed on certain Frontier vehicles due to a parts shortage. Nissan
reviewed production records and determined that fifty (50) Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed vehicles were produced and shipped without a standard specification tow hitch. Further review determined the Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed trim level was certified under FMVSS 301 S6.2 (b) with the tow hitch installed. On September 3, 2021, Nissan
implemented production countermeasures to prevent further delivery of this trim level without a hitch. On September 11, 2021, Nissan
initiated a proactive dealer action to install the hitch on the affected vehicles.
October 2021 – Nissan
reviewed the safety assessment to evaluate the impact of the missing hitch to the regulation.
November 17, 2021 – Nissan
decided to conduct a Voluntary Recall for the remaining twenty two (22) subject vehicles to install the tow hitch.
- Description of Corrective Action:
Nissan
will notify all owners of affected vehicles by December 16, 2021. Dealers will be notified on November 23, 2021. The dealer will install the tow hitch, relays and associated wiring free of charge.
Nissan
will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy for the subject vehicles as they are still under warranty.

reviewed production records and determined that fifty (50) Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed vehicles were produced and shipped without a standard specification tow hitch. Further review determined the Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed trim level was certified under FMVSS 301 S6.2 (b) with the tow hitch installed. On September 3, 2021, Nissan
implemented production countermeasures to prevent further delivery of this trim level without a hitch. On September 11, 2021, Nissan
initiated a proactive dealer action to install the hitch on the affected vehicles. October 2021 – Nissan
reviewed the safety assessment to evaluate the impact of the missing hitch to the regulation. November 17, 2021 – Nissan
decided to conduct a Voluntary Recall for the remaining twenty-two (22) subject vehicles to install the tow hitch.
