North America, Inc. (Nissan
) is recalling certain 2024 Titan, Frontier, Infiniti
QX60, Pathfinder, 2023-2024 Sentra, Versa, Kicks, Infiniti
QX50, and 2023 Rogue vehicles. Due to a manufacturing issue, the driver’s air bag inflator may absorb moisture, and cause the air bag to deploy improperly.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the front driver’s air bag assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 10, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan
customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan

Description of the Defect:
In the affected vehicles, the driver airbag inflater may have been misassembled with gaskets missing, which could allow moisture to enter the inflater and build up over time. Moisture exposure over a significant period of time can have an adverse effect to the propellant and result in a change in pressure of the inflater, which may impact the airbag deployment performance. If this occurs, the driver is at risk for injury.
Chronology of Principal Events:
October 18, 2023 – During routine maintenance at the supplier, a technician reported a misaligned gasket on a driver’s airbag inflater. The supplier initiated an investigation.
October 27, 2023 – The supplier, along with Nissan
, conducted a part sort and identified twenty-one (21) suspect parts. Additionally, Nissan
coordinated a yard audit across multiple plants and identified an additional twenty-six (26) suspect parts that were installed in vehicles. All vehicles containing suspect parts were repaired.
November 2023 through January 2024 – Nissan
and the supplier investigated the potential effect of a missing gasket on the performance of the air bag inflator. Multiple tests were conducted, including humidity cycle testing and durability testing to evaluate inflator performance without the gasket.
Concurrently, Nissan
worked with the supplier to identify the root cause of the misaligned gasket. The supplier determined the gasket installation process was not properly controlled, which could potentially cause one or both gaskets to become misaligned. The supplier reviewed production records and determined that three hundred and fifty-one (351) suspect inflators may have been affected by the supplier concern.
February 8, 2024 – After testing, Nissan
and the supplier determined that there was no immediate impact to inflator performance with a missing gasket, but it could allow moisture to enter the inflator and build up over time. That potential long-term exposure could have an adverse effect on the propellant and result in a change in pressure of the inflator, which may impact the airbag deployment performance.
February 20, 2024 – Out of an abundance of caution, Nissan
decided to conduct a safety recall campaign to remedy the remaining affected vehicles in the U.S. market.
Nissan
is not aware of any warranty claims, accidents or injuries related to the subject condition.
Description of Corrective Action:
Nissan
or INFINITI
will notify the owners of the potentially affected vehicles beginning on April 10, 2024, and urge them to bring their vehicle to a Nissan
dealer or INFINITI
retailer for repair. Dealers will be notified on February 29, 2024. Dealers will be instructed to replace the front driver airbag assembly with a new one. All repairs will be performed free of charge for parts and labor and should take less than one (1.0) hour to complete.
Nissan
will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy since the subject vehicles are under warranty.

October 18, 2023 – During routine maintenance at the supplier, a technician reported a misaligned gasket on a driver’s airbag inflator.
The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 24V-154

5. Description of the Defect:
In the affected vehicles, the driver airbag inflater may have been misassembled with
gaskets missing, which could allow moisture to enter the inflater and build up over time.
Moisture exposure over a significant period of time can have an adverse effect to the
propellant and result in reduced pressure inside of the inflater, which may cause the airbag
to deploy improperly. An air bag that deploys with reduced force may not protect the
driver as intended during a crash, which can increase the risk of injury.
6. Chronology of Principal Events:
October 18, 2023 – During routine maintenance at the supplier, a technician reported a
misaligned gasket on a driver’s airbag inflater. The supplier initiated an investigation.
October 27, 2023 – The supplier, along with Nissan, conducted a part sort and identified
twenty-one (21) suspect parts. Additionally, Nissan coordinated a yard audit across multiple
plants and identified an additional twenty-six (26) suspect parts that were installed in
vehicles. All vehicles containing suspect parts were repaired.
November 2023 through January 2024 – Nissan and the supplier investigated the potential
effect of a missing gasket on the performance of the air bag inflator. Multiple tests were
conducted, including humidity cycle testing and durability testing to evaluate inflator
performance without the gasket. The testing did not show any increased risk of inflator
rupture.
Concurrently, Nissan worked with the supplier to identify the root cause of the misaligned
gasket. The supplier determined the gasket installation process was not properly
controlled, which could potentially cause one or both gaskets to become misaligned. The
supplier reviewed production records and determined that three hundred and fifty-one
(351) suspect inflators may have been affected by the supplier concern.
February 8, 2024 – After testing, Nissan and the supplier determined that there was no
immediate impact to inflator performance with a missing gasket, but it could allow
moisture to enter the inflator and build up over time. That potential long-term exposure
could have an adverse effect on the propellant and result in reduced pressure inside the
inflator, which may impact the airbag deployment performance during a crash.
February 20, 2024 – Out of an abundance of caution, Nissan decided to conduct a safety
recall campaign to remedy the remaining affected vehicles in the U.S. market.
Nissan is not aware of any warranty claims, accidents or injuries related to the subject
condition.
7. Description of Corrective Action:
Nissan or INFINITI
will notify the owners of the potentially affected vehicles beginning on
April 10, 2024, and urge them to bring their vehicle to a Nissan dealer or INFINITI
retailer for
repair. Dealers were notified on February 29, 2024. Dealers will be instructed to replace the
front driver airbag assembly with a new one. All repairs will be performed free of charge
for parts and labor and should take less than one (7.0) hour to complete.
Nissan will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning
reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy since the subject
vehicles are under warranty.

Copies of all notices will be provided to NHTSA as they become available.
