| MY 2020-2021 Nissan | 16,080 |
Percentage of Vehicles Estimated to Actually Contain the Noncompliance:
3.2%
Description of the Noncompliance:
An issue during bulb manufacturing at the Tier 2 supplier, which has since been corrected, led to the internal lead wire distance being less than 1.9mm on certain production lots. This shorter internal lead wire distance generated a lower resistance in the base of the bulb for insertion and extraction into the headlight assembly. After an affected bulb was inserted into the headlight housing, a small micro crack may develop at the base of the bulb glass because of the pressure between the socket terminal and additional stress caused by vibration and temperature during vehicle shipping. As a result, the crack may led to a loss of vacuum inside the bulb, which can cause it to become inoperable.
In this condition, the front right and/or left side turn signal bulbs do not conform to requirements defined in S7.1.1 Front turn signal lamps of FMVSS No. 108; Lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment. If the front right and/or left side turn signal bulbs are inoperable, there will not be an indication to on-coming drivers or pedestrians that the vehicle will be turning, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Basis for Determination of the Existence of a Noncompliance
During the period from July 2020 to October 2020, Nissan
noticed an increase in turn signal bulb warranty claims for Versa and Titan models. Nissan
opened investigations with the lamp suppliers to study the rate increase. The majority of these claims indicated that the front right and/or left turn signal bulb was not operating.
October 2020 through December 2020 – The lamp suppliers worked with the bulb supplier to investigate the issue. The investigation found that the inoperative bulb was caused by a micro crack in the base of the bulb and identified insufficient contact surface between the lead wire and bulb glass. The affected bulb production LOT was identified by the supplier, and a production change was implemented to increase the internal lead wire length, thereby increasing the resistance at the base of the bulb. Nissan
issued a dealer action to collect suspect parts for analysis and continued to monitor warranty claims.
January 2021 through March 2021 – Nissan
continued to see an increase in suspect parts collected from the dealer action that included bulbs from LOT codes not initially identified by the bulb supplier. As a result, Nissan
continued to investigate the bulb failure.
April 2021 through May 2021 – Additional testing and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) confirmed that the insufficient lead wire length caused the bulb failures. Nissan
requested all additional suspect LOT codes with a lead wire length less than 1.9 mm from the bulb supplier.
Based on the new LOT code information provided by the bulb supplier, Nissan
reviewed vehicle production records to determine whether additional Versa and Titan vehicles were potentially affected.
June 23, 2021 – Nissan
decided to conduct a recall campaign to remedy this issue because a noncompliance could not be ruled out in the potentially affected vehicles.
Nissan
is not aware of any accidents or alleged injuries relating to the subject condition.
Description of Corrective Action:
Nissan
will notify all owners of potentially affected vehicles beginning August 20, 2021. Dealers will be notified on June 24, 2021. Dealers will inspect the LOT code of both the front left and right hand turn signal bulbs. If the bulb(s) are from the affected lots, the bulb(s) will be replaced with a new one.
We will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy as the subject vehicles are under warranty.

Copies of all notices will be provided to NHTSA as they become available.

5. Description of the Noncompliance:
An issue during bulb manufacturing at the Tier 2 supplier, which has since been corrected,
led to the internal lead wire distance being less than 1.9mm on certain production lots.
This shorter internal lead wire distance generated a lower resistance in the base of the
bulb for insertion and extraction into the headlight assembly. After an affected bulb was
inserted into the headlight housing, a small micro crack may develop at the base of the
bulb glass because of the pressure between the socket terminal and additional stress
caused by vibration and temperature during vehicle shipping. As a result, the crack may
led to a loss of vacuum inside the bulb, which can cause it to become inoperable.
In this condition, the front right and/or left side turn signal bulbs do not conform to
requirements defined in S7.1.1 Front turn signal lamps of FMVSS No. 108; Lamps, reflective
devices, and associated equipment. If the front right and/or left side turn signal bulbs are
inoperable, there will not be an indication to on-coming drivers or pedestrians that the
vehicle will be turning, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
6. Basis for Determination of the Existence of a Noncompliance
During the period from July 2020 to October 2020, Nissan
noticed an increase in turn
signal bulb warranty claims for Versa and Titan models. Nissan
opened investigations with
the lamp suppliers to study the rate increase. The majority of these claims indicated that
the front right and/or left turn signal bulb was not operating.
October 2020 through December 2020 – The lamp suppliers worked with the bulb supplier
to investigate the issue. The investigation found that the inoperative bulb was caused by a
micro crack in the base of the bulb and identified insufficient contact surface between the
lead wire and bulb glass. The affected bulb production LOT was identified by the supplier,
and a production change was implemented to increase the internal lead wire length,
thereby increasing the resistance at the base of the bulb. Nissan
issued a dealer action to
collect suspect parts for analysis and continued to monitor warranty claims.
January 2021 through March 2021 – Nissan
continued to see an increase in suspect parts
collected from the dealer action that included bulbs from LOT codes not initially identified
by the bulb supplier. As a result, Nissan
continued to investigate the bulb failure.
April 2021 through May 2021 – Additional testing and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) confirmed
that the insufficient lead wire length caused the bulb failures. Nissan
requested all
additional suspect LOT codes with a lead wire length less than 1.9 mm from the bulb
supplier.
Based on the new LOT code information provided by the bulb supplier, Nissan
reviewed
vehicle production records to determine whether additional Versa and Titan vehicles were
potentially affected.
June 23, 2021 – Nissan
decided to conduct a recall campaign to remedy this issue because
a noncompliance could not be ruled out in the potentially affected vehicles.
Nissan
is not aware of any accidents or alleged injuries relating to the subject condition.
7. Description of Corrective Action:
Nissan
notified all owners of potentially affected vehicles on August 20, 2021. Dealers
were notified on June 24, 2021. Dealers will inspect the LOT code of both the front left and
right hand turn signal bulbs. If the bulb(s) are from the affected lots, the bulb(s) will be
replaced with a new one.
We will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning
reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy as the subject vehicles
are under warranty.

Nissan has notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transport Canada that it is recalling certain MY2020-2021 Nissan Titan and Versa vehicles in the US and Canada to address both the right and left front turn signal bulbs.
Due to a supplier issue that has since been corrected, certain lots of turn signal bulbs may develop a crack at the base of the bulb glass which can cause it to become inoperable. Dealers will inspect both the right and left front turn signal bulb lot code. If a bulb lot code is confirmed to be affected, the bulb will be replaced.
***** What Dealers Should Do****
1. Verify if vehicles are affected by this Voluntary Recall using Service Comm or DBS National Service history – Open Campaign I.D. PC811, PM986.
• New vehicles in dealer inventory can also be identified using DBS (Sales-> Vehicle Inventory, and filter by Open Campaign).
Refer to NPSB 15-460 for additional information
• Please continue to check newly arriving inventory for campaign applicability.
2. Dealers should use NTB21-056 for Titan and NTB21-057-for Versa to remedy any vehicles subject to this campaign.
3. Once remedied, dealers should submit the claim, using the claims coding provided, and release the vehicle.
