***** Campaign Summary *****

Nissan is issuing a Voluntary Safety and Emissions Recall to inspect specific 2020 Titan (A61) vehicles identified in Service Comm to inspect and remedy the engine control (EGI) harness. Due to a manufacturing issue at the supplier, the EGI harness may have been assembled incorrectly and may have left an exposed wire. If visible damage is found, during the remedy, the entire harness must be replaced.

If the transmission power wire is exposed it may contact the copper wire from the shielded transmission power wire and cause an electrical short or arcing. An electrical short from an exposed wire may cause the customer to experience abnormal engine and transmission performance. A short might also affect the fuel pump power supply, resulting in engine stall while driving without the ability to restart or cause thermal damage and the possibility of a thermal incident.

Affected vehicles are subject to stop sale and are either currently in dealer inventory or assigned and in transit to the dealer.

***** Release Schedule *****

Description of the Defect:

On certain Model Year 2020 Nissan Titan and Titan XD vehicles, the EGI harness may have been assembled incorrectly by the supplier, which may have left an exposed wire.  If this occurs, the exposed wire may contact the copper wire from the shielded transmission power wire and cause an electrical short or arcing.

An electrical short may cause the vehicle to experience abnormal engine and transmission performance.  This short might affect the fuel pump power supply, potentially causing an engine stall while driving without the ability to restart; which may increase risk of a crash.  In addition, the short may cause harness thermal damage that could potentially cause a thermal incident, which may increase risk of injury.

Chronology of Principal Events:

March 12, 2020 – Certain Nissan Titan vehicles reportedly experienced an electrical issue upon connecting the batteryNissan immediately began to investigate the issue.

March 2020 through July 2020 – Nissan experienced business interruptions of U.S. operations due to COVID-19 public health concerns.  The Canton, MS plant was shut down during March 30, 2020 to June 8, 2020.  During the shutdown, the investigation process was slowed due to disruptions while complying with stayat-home orders.  Nissan attempted to work with the supplier to investigate the issue; however, the supplier also experienced business interruptions until the end of July 2020.

August 2020 through September 2020 – Upon resuming operations, the supplier initiated an internal investigation to determine the cause of the incident.  As part of the investigation process, the supplier began bench testing to recreate the condition and assess the failure modes.

October 2020 – The supplier investigation revealed that on certain Titan vehicles, the splice-making process during EGI harness manufacturing might have left an exposed wire.  If the transmission power wire is exposed, then it may contact the copper wire from the shielded transmission power wire and cause an electrical short or arcing on some of the affected vehicles.

During this period, on October 5, 2020, Nissan received a field report of a thermal incident occurring under the hood that appeared to be related to the subject condition.  Nissan investigated the alleged incident and initiated further study of the recovered components to analyze the root cause of the thermal incident.

November 2020 – Nissan’s investigation of the recovered components revealed that a damaged EGI harness was the cause of the thermal event.  No injuries were reported.  Nissan also confirmed that the subject condition only affects Titan and Titan XD models equipped with gasoline engines due to the unique frame design and manufacturing process.

December 1, 2020 – Based on the results of the investigation, Nissan decided to conduct a safety recall campaign.

Description of Corrective Action:

Owners of the subject vehicles will be notified beginning on January 27, 2021.  Dealers were notified on December 9, 2020.  The dealer will inspect the EGI harness and replace with a new one if damaged.  If no damage, the harness will be re-assembled.

Nissan will not include a statement in the Part 577 owner notification concerning reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy for the subject vehicles as they are under warranty.  Your office will be provided with a copy of the Part 577 owner notification for approval.

Copy of Notices:

Copies of all notices will be provided to NHTSA as they become available.

[1] The estimated percentage of vehicles involved with defect is 0.8%.  However, 1% is used on NHTSA’s safety portal because it will not allow decimal values.
